Welcome to Philadelphia

Because a majority of Karen and Matthew's guests were from out of town, they wanted their family and friends to experience some of what Philadelphia is famous for.

In addition to having their guests greeted by Benjamin Franklin, they were treated to bite-sized Philadelphia Cheese Steaks served during the cocktail hour, and later in the evening, danced with The Mummers!Columbia Station in Phoenixville PA

They had also invested some of their time into a custom-tailored wedding favor, a personalized CD. It not only was made up of songs of their choosing, but inside each jacket, every song selection was cited as to why it was picked out for the soundtrack. It was a step above the norm and was definitely appreciated by everyone.

Instead of the traditional tossing of the bouquet, Karen and Matthew decided to have an "Anniversary Dance".Columbia Station in Phoenixville PA By eliminating married couples from the dance floor, based on how long they were married, they were able to present the "Most Experienced Newlyweds" with the bouquet in exchange for some advice from the winners.

As you might gather from looking over their song selections below, "Moulin Rouge" was the first movie Karen and Matt watched together when they were dating, thus many of their song selections came from the film.

Thank you Karen and Matthew for allowing me to be a part of your event! Thanks to your careful planning, it was fantastic! It also didn't hurt that you were two of the nicest clients I have ever had the good fortune to work with!

The iWedding Phenomenon

There's no denying the power of the iPod.

The ability to manage your own party playlist is fantastic for nearly any casual get-together where friends can relax, hang out, and talk.

However, employing an iPod for most formal affairs, such as weddings, may not be as cost-effective as some brides seem to think.

Before I give my opinion, I want to be clear that I'm not condemning the iPod, as it can be very useful before the arrival of the wedding day. Making the preparation for a wedding, without the assistance of a wedding planner, can be a monumental task. In the past, a busy bride-to-be had to make time for reading books and magazines about planning, all while keeping herself in shape for the big day.

Today, a bride can workout and listen to a podcast at the same time. They can tune in at any time, which is a big change from the days when brides and grooms sought information on their work computers or when they come home exhausted from work.

Thanks to the iTunes Store, you can skip the bookstore with a few mouse clicks. Try doing a search on "Wedding". It will yield a massive variety of books, suggested music and podcasts, covering wedding planning, reception ideas and honeymoon guides.

Now for the bad news…

An increasingly popular idea is to save money by replacing wedding entertainers with an iPod. While this might sound like a great idea, there are some things to consider.

A wedding entertainer does more than just play music. To be blunt, hiring a DJ for their music is like hiring a photographer for their film.

A great wedding entertainer is like a great movie director. When you see all the actors hitting their marks, the lighting is perfect, and the set design is flawless, you know there is an excellent director behind the scenes helping to make that happen.

Working with an individual who can assist in the flawless execution of your event, helping coordinate the efforts of your other wedding professionals, and maybe even stepping out of their traditional job description of entertaining a wedding and assisting the photographer or banquet manager when something goes wrong is a much more valuable asset than any money you save with an "iWedding".

No matter what you choose to do for your wedding day, hopefully, after you invest some time in the matter, you can come upon an entertainment decision that makes you comfortable and confident.

Ultimately, that is all that really matters, right?

A Wedding Photography Idea

Photo taken by Ultimate Images

Every bride's wedding day is extremely busy, with not a moment to spare. However, after the bride and groom's ceremony is over and the newly married couple and their wedding party are being photographed, the guests are drumming their fingers waiting for the bridal party to arrive.

To shorten the layover time, many brides elect to have their photos taken before the ceremony, but that still makes for limited time, lots of rushing to get everything done, and plenty of unnecessary anxiety.

Everyone wants the very best photos of their day, but at what expense?

Fast-forward to one year later and imagine paging through a wedding album. It's full of wedding day photos of the families, the wedding party, and various reception pictures. Nice.

Now imagine that same album, only this time, add a plethora of stunning photographs of the bride and groom in several different beautiful locations around the Philadelphia area. Love Park at City Hall. The Fairmount Waterworks. The Union League. The Liberty Bell. Independence Hall.

You probably wouldn't want your groom to see your dress before your actual wedding day, so how could you possibly visit all these locations in the time between your ceremony and reception without your guests passing out from starvation or going absolutely crazy?

Try this: Two weeks after your wedding day has come and gone, and you've had plenty of down time rejuvenating on your honeymoon, put your dress back on one last time and take a tour of Philadelphia with your photographer!

The result?

You will have tons of GREAT pictures at famous Philadelphia locations. You won't feel rushed or stressed, allowing you to relax and enjoy the photography experience, looking completely content and well-rested! In addition, your guests won't have to wait very long and you'll have much more quality time to enjoy the wedding day itself with your friends and family!

The $20 Million Wedding Cake

From Luxist

For the Luxury Brands Bridal Show this weekend at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Mimi So Jewelers teamed up with cake designer Nahid La Patisserie Artistique to create what might be the most expensive wedding cake ever made.

The extravagant $20 million diamond-studded wedding cake is the star attraction of the bridal show and will be unveiled on exclusive Rodeo Drive.

"Where else would you debut a $20 million wedding cake but on Rodeo Drive?" said show organiser Ilona Sherman.

The cake is protected by a team of uniformed security guards at all times, she said. And there's no way it will ever be eaten.

"I think diamonds are too hard on the stomach," Sherman said.

An Irish Wedding on St. Patrick's Day

Jessica & Christopher wanted their guests to experience a traditional Irish wedding, complete with authentic Irish Step Dancers, pints of Guinness, and mackerel rolls.

They chose the more relaxed food stations dinner over a formal served meal. Their guests were encouraged to eat, drink, and be merry, dancing the night away with the bride and groom to a playlist entirely selected by Christopher, a former disc jockey himself.

While Christopher & Jessica did enjoy the traditional dances, they passed on the bouquet and garter in favor of maximizing their socializing and celebration time.

The Best Wedding Reception... Ever!

This is easily one of the most helpful books a bride can read when planning her wedding.

Peter Merry's "The Best Wedding Reception... Ever!" is, as the subtitle clearly states, "Your guide to creating an unforgettably fun affair".

After reading this book, I have found that while I already embrace a majority of Peter's ideals, this book is clearly a critical read for the bride who is planning more than just a functional celebration, but a creative and truly memorable event.

I heavily endorse it and recommend that you pick it up right away!

Choosing The Right DJ

One of the hardest parts of planning a wedding is being able to identify real value.

Every salesperson out there is doing their best to try to persuade you to use their service, so how does a bride determine where she should spend her time and money?

For most brides, price by itself is not the key factor when her wedding day plans are being considered. Most brides will compare all the services that are available, gathering useful information about each, and then determine which service suits her needs best based on overall value.

When it comes to choosing wedding entertainment, a bride needs to ask herself exactly what she is looking for:

Personality – Are you looking for an engaging entertainment director who can motivate your crowd onto the dance floor or a passive disc jockey who can conservatively address your crowd in a more elegant fashion? Maybe you would like a mixture of both? How do you determine what kind of personality your candidate has?

I always stress the importance of a bride and groom sitting down face-to-face with their potential music provider to ask questions about their methods and styles. It's not just about the answers alone, but also how comfortable you feel around that DJ.

A bride and groom should be able to walk into their reception with confidence, knowing they have selected the exact sort of representative they were looking for.

Accountability – You should have the ability to speak with previous clients of the DJ. Speaking with someone who has actually used the DJ's service will provide you with many of the unbiased answers you need to make a well-informed decision.

A professional wedding specialist who has earned the trust and personal endorsement of his clients is certainly not easy to find. Finding a DJ who is willing to present that information to you without making you ask is even rarer.

Consider this: If you're thinking of switching cell phone service providers, who is more compelling, the "Can You Hear Me Now?" guy or someone who actually uses that cell phone service?

Flexibility – How willing is your DJ to accommodate your needs, both in respect to music and how they govern themselves on the microphone, as well as in their interaction with your guests?

Does your DJ listen to you as you tell them about your needs, wants, and expectations or do they go on-and-on about the places they have been and the equipment they use?

Many DJs often fall trap to the "I Know More About Your Wedding Than You Do" disease. They begin telling you what you want and don’t want, criticize your requests, and don’t really tune in to the needs of the people who matter the most: You, your fiance, and your guests.

Unless you are looking to book an "artist" for your entertainment, I would recommend you sit down with your DJ, before signing any contracts, to get a feel as to how much they want to make your event a success for you and how much they want to make it a success for them.

Presentation – I'm often asked by a bride and groom about whether or not I have a DVD demo of my service. I've come to the realization that most people only want to see a video demo because they want to make sure that I'm not a showboat, I’m not conceited and self-centered, and I don’t use a "DJ voice".

I personally believe that a wedding is not the place for advertisements, banners, business card trays, or over-the-microphone "plugs" like "Hey everybody, I'm DJ Scrappy Dooooooo! You’re listening to Drop It Like It's Hot Disc Jockeys!".

You should ask your DJ if they have photos of their equipment in your ballroom. It gives you a great sense of what to expect.

It might not sound important now, but imagine walking into your reception and seeing this on your dance floor.

Ultimately, a sound system should look elegant and be just large enough to cover the room with enough sound to allow people to speak comfortably at their tables during dinner, and completely satiate the dance floor with full and clean sound.

For example, click on some of the locations, I've listed here: Blue Bell Country ClubCescaphe BallroomRiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve

You'll see that each room is slightly different in the presentation, but one theme remains constant: Clean and elegant.

The "Wow" Factor – Last, but certainly not least, you should ask a DJ the following question: "What specifically can you do to 'wow' our guests?"

Is it the way they speak on the microphone? Is it their light show? Do they have ways of getting the crowd involved without using inflatable guitars? Basically, you're asking, in a roundabout way, "What makes you so special, Mr. DJ?".

Finding an entertainment director with the right balance of fun and sophistication is essentially what you're looking for, right? Not too hot, not too cold, but just right. How does the DJ differentiate themselves from the competition?

While there are numerous other things to consider, hopefully I've provided you with some helpful questions to add to your DJ interview.

Good luck planning the soundtrack for the most important day of your life!

Take Your Photos With You

What does nearly every wedding guest bring to a wedding?

A camera.

For a variety of reasons, more often than not, you won't get to see those precious moments captured by your friends and family... Until now.

These days, most people are carrying digital cameras, so why not get their photos printed before you head to your honeymoon?

Here's what I recommend: Get yourself a basket and a small photo printer like the HP Photosmart A516 Compact Photo Printer for your gift table.

Set up a small frame explaining how people can easily remove the memory stick from their digital camera, stick it into one of the printer slots, and print two copies (one for them to keep and one to put in your basket).

Now you'll be able to bring a few dozen photos of your wedding day along with you on your honeymoon. It's a nice way to enjoy the afterglow of your celebration in a quieter, more relaxed setting.
