With the contemporary styling, breath-taking views of the Philadelphia skyline and a larger-than-life peek into a captivating 550,000-gallon Shark Realm, filled with over 20 sharks and hundreds of amazing fish, the Currents Ballroom at Adventure Aquarium is easily one of the most unique locations around.

While Laura and Louis' friends and family enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, the newly wed couple strolled the riverwalk along the shore of the Delaware River.

The skyline of Philadelphia and the Benjamin Franklin bridge added to the setting for the photos and video shot by Clair Pruett. I shot a few photos, too... You can see them here.

The energy and happiness in the room was apparent from the start. And not just because this was the THIRD wedding I had entertained for this group of guests!

What really stood out from this wedding was Tony (the Best Man) breaking into a solo dance interpretation of D4L's "Laffy Taffy" at the end of his speech and Louis' father laying claim to the microphone and serenading the crowd with Elvis' Jailhouse Rock.

It was a high-energy group from start to end! Hopefully, the sharks will have a speedy recovery from all the lights and sound!

In the heart of Center City Philadelphia, Le Meridien lies at our city's epicenter of art, culture, and entertainment. Just steps away is the Love Sculpture, a symbol of peace and love that complemented what was a remarkably tranquil and romantic wedding reception.

As Gina and Soorena's friends and family waited for the wedding ceremony to begin, the sound of a Persian guitar echoed through the room.

Celebrated in true Persian tradition, Soorena asked Gina for her hand in marriage three times throughout the ceremony before she accepted. It was a very moving experience.

After being pronounced husband and wife, their friends and family made their way into the cocktail area, celebrated in the Abele Library. Looking out the windows, you could easily see City Hall and William Penn towering above.

After cocktails, everyone was seated in the Trumbauer Ballroom and waited for the arrival of Gina and Soorena. What the guests witnesed next was totally unexpected by everyone except for Gina, Soorena and me.

Weeks prior to the wedding day, Gina and Soorena decided to take ballroom dance lessons for their first dance, but wanted to do something fun to liven up the moment. About halfway into the song, their ballad switched from "Forever and For Always" by Shania Twain to "Just The Way You Are" by Bruno Mars. For just one moment, the crowd gasped thinking the song had failed. The smiles and laughs that followed were priceless.

From that moment on, the tone was set. We danced to Top 40, Persian songs, Oldies... Everything. It was a GREAT wedding!

That's what the official web site would say about the World Cafe Live. I think they could have skipped all that and just said: "Wow."

This is, hands down, one of the most naturally beautiful spaces in the Philadelphia region. From the hard woods and polished surfaces to the detail-oriented and attentive catering, this venue flawlessly combines comfort with elegance, delivering an experience of pure, relaxing satisfaction.

Danielle and Jason filled the Downstairs Hall (a site that has hosted the likes of Wyclef Jean, Jason Mraz and Counting Crows) with some of the more awesome friends and family I have experienced.

I'm not just saying that, by the way...

I mean, Jason's dad played a banjo during the wedding ceremony. Other than Béla Fleck, who else would play a banjo at their son's wedding? It was outstanding.

It was a real pleasure entertaining their guests all night long, especially with Gretchen McHale and Kerry "Holy" Diver of the World Cafe Live consistently at my side, helping me to deliver a GREAT wedding reception. I DEFINITELY look forward to seeing them again in the future!

A Sweet Reception In Wilmington

If you were to ask my opinion of the East Coast's most romantic and nostalgic hotels, Hotel du Pont would be one of my Top Ten favorites. Affectionate charm and elegant sophistication runs rampant in this highly prestigious Wilmington hotel. Situated close to Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library, Delaware Art Museum, the Longwood Gardens and Conservatories and more, there is no shortage of rich heritage and culture that surround the building.

The architectural décor of Hotel du Pont's magnificent Gold Ballroom features rich wood and hand-crafted medallions of twenty famous women of history, from Helen of Troy to Cleopatra. The hardwood floors and thirty-foot high ceilings "wow" every first-time visitor.

However... There is a distinct trade-off. Due to the size and expanse of the Gold Ballroom, the acoustics are similar to a canyon.

Not to sound like a commercial, but fortunately I was using the Bose L1 sound columns. Their sound dispersion filled the room with the clearest of sound, heard the same from any spot in the ballroom.

According to Jillian Cournoyer, Senior Catering Sales Manager of the Hotel du Pont: "I love your sound system. It looks great and sounds better than anything else I ever hear in this room. When I'm standing in the foyer, waiting for the introductions to begin, most DJs and Bands sound like they're shouting into a CB radio. I love you guys!"

Speaking of love, it was totally obvious that Chelsea and Allen are a great match. Their friends and family really seemed to enjoy every moment of the celebration. I personally had a GREAT TIME!

Located at the corner of Third and Arch Streets, TRUST is nestled in colonial Philadelphia. They're next door to the Betsy Ross House and within short walking distance of Ben Franklin’s home and Independence Hall. The newly restored exterior of the building is adorned with towering columns and floor-to-ceiling windows that evoke America’s architectural Renaissance.

Constructed in 1902, TRUST was known as The Girard Corn Exchange Bank until 1970. It was placed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places in January, 1977, and purchased in 2003 by Yaron Properties, Inc. Does the venue look familiar to you? Maybe because in 2004, it was the home of MTV’s Real World Philadelphia series, filmed from April to August of 2004.

Megan and Matt's wedding reception was one of the most relaxing, yet superbly elegant celebrations I have ever had the honor of entertaining. The setting was awesome and the food prepared by the masters at Feastivities was incomparable.

Megan and Matt's friends and family were also very cool and had a great time dancing and celebrating the union of a laid-back and all-out party-oriented couple. There were very few moments I can remember looking at the dance floor and not seeing Megan and Matt dancing together. We had over two hours of dance time and they seemed to be soaking up every available moment!

When it comes to restarting the "wedding season", this was truly one of the best receptions I can remember... Ever.

It's been a LONG TIME since I was last at the Downingtown Country Club! Their ballroom, which accommodates up to 300 guests, is complemented with a reception area, bridal suite, and a garden-lined covered patio overlooking the golf course for your outdoor cocktail reception.

As you can see from the photo gallery, the sky on this day was bright and sunny. One of the benefits of having your wedding reception in early September is more opportunity for vivid, outdoor photos.

While some of Gina and Dan's guests enjoyed an outdoor cocktail hour, some other guests remained inside to watch a slideshow playing in the foyer.

I like a cocktail hour that can be broken into different areas of a facility. That is a luxury more often reserved for mansions and private residences and estates. I think it makes the event feel a little more natural and promotes real comfort in the friends and family who've come for the reception.

Gina and Dan elected to have about 20 minutes of open dancing before dinner, a relatively new trend in this area, but one that has been around in New Jersey and New York for at least as long as I have been alive.

After dinner, the dance floor exploded! It was a great event and an unbelievable party ensued!

A Home Away From Home

It seems as though I have been spending a lot of time in Bryn Athyn lately. The other day, I joked on my Facebook page that I was considering opening a P.O. Box in that town.

To be honest, I would not mind living in Bryn Athyn. The town is lined with historic buildings, trees as far as the eye can see, and the best part of all... Not too much traffic.

Stephanie and Samuel's day began with a beautiful outdoor ceremony, set in the luxurious gardens of the Cairnwood Estate. As you can see in their photo gallery, the soundtrack for their ceremony (and cocktail hour) was provided by a harpist.

After their guests had an opportunity to stroll around the mansion, enjoying cocktails and hors d'œuvres, everyone gathered in the Great Hall to enjoy Stephanie and Samuel's first dance as husband and wife.

Despite having the guests in several different rooms for dinner, it was not difficult at all to get a "party ready" crowd into the Conservatory for two hours of dancing.

Everyone really enjoyed the music, especially some songs that I haven't heard in a LONG time. For example, check out the video below. I think the last time I heard that song, it was in a Swiffer commercial.

Sara and Mark's guests were AMAZINGLY friendly! I was really struck by how they were not only really nice when they came up with requests, but EVERYONE seemed to have "PermaSmile". Everytime I looked up, the dance floor was filled and every face had a smile on it! Awesome!

There are very few ballrooms in this area that you could truly consider as "palatial". The Grand Ballroom at Mendenhall Inn is one of those rooms that has a distinct "WOW" factor. When your friends and family walk into this gigantic ballroom, with it's distinct architecture and very courteous and efficient staff, even the "hardest to impress people" can't help but stand in awe for a moment.

I had the opportunity to work alongside two of the most talented photographers around: Pete Malone and Jennifer Childress, two of the six founding members of the Philadelphia Wedding Project.

Stefanie and James' wedding was "off the hook"! I cannot believe how quickly people sprinted to the dance floor to get the party rocking! Want to see what the dance floor looked like all night? Check this out.

The Brantwyn Estate is a member of the great du Pont family of properties and is seemingly designed for a relaxing affair in Georgian mansion surroundings. Betsy and Paul's friends and family moved from room to room for dinner and dancing throughout the night, but the celebration began with a decadent cocktail hour and a first dance shared outside on the well-manicured terrace.

After a fabulous meal, the guests all made their way first to the foyer for the cutting of the cake, then progressed back to the Music Room for some dancing that did not stop all night long.

Again, guests were able to come in to enjoy all their favorite song requests, but if they wanted to step out on the plantation-like ground for a stroll under the stars, the venue was without boundaries.

I must admit, this location is extremely difficult for anyone providing entertainment. Given the multiple rooms that require sound coverage, a DJ could run miles of wires from room to room, or you could have done it my way. Wireless. Clean, rich, sharp.

It was a great event that I was truly honored to be a part of. Don't forget to check out the pictures!

"This weddin' was a teed baw!" is an old Scottish saying that basically means: This wedding was a success from the start. Take a look at the photos and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about.

As Lauren and Christopher's guests pulled up the driveway to the Merion Tribute House, they were greeted by an authentic Scottish bagpiper playing his pipes loudly and proudly.

The Merion Tribute House is setup like the first floor of a castle. Guests were able to move freely around the building, enjoying food and drink in the Legion Room, relaxing on plush furniture in the Lounge, sharing conversation in the Hall, or taking in some fresh air or a cigar on the terrace.

The night was filled with not only the music you usually hear at weddings, but if you check out this video, you'll see there was some Scottish music, too! Click here to hear the song they were dancing to (in the video) a little better.

It was a great night!

Gleaming with the polished touches of a $20 million renovation, the Dolce Valley Forge exudes an essence of relaxed luxury. With it's marble floors and mahogany woods welcoming you into their updated retreat, it is a great venue to consider when looking for a refined, yet comfortable location to host a wedding.

I want to thank Paveet and Katie at the Dolce Valley Forge for being so helpful and accommodating all night long. Kindness and thoughtfulness in banquet directors is always appreciated, not just by the guests in attendance, but also the other professionals in the room.

I really enjoyed working with a videographer I've never met before, J.C. Costa at New Pace Productions. Check out their wedding videos here.

This wedding reception was a blast!

It seems to me that the traditional timeline of Philadelphia-area weddings is finally beginning to evolve to a more laid-back and fun agenda.

Right after the first dance, we opened the dance floor for about ten minutes, inviting everyone to join the bride and groom for some dancing. Afterwards, we enjoyed the blessing, a few words from the Maids of Honor and AN OUTSTANDING toast from the best man!

I truly enjoyed being a part of this VERY FUN affair!

The Ballroom at the Ben is one of Philadelphia's most extravagant facilities. With giant crystal chandeliers and old World elegance, it is an opulent setting for life’s most important events.

When providing entertainment at the Ballroom at The Ben, one thing that I personally look forward to is spending a few short hours working with a GREAT banquet director, Mr. Ott Ricci. He combines an elegant and expeditious delivery of special events with a laid-back and fun demeanor. I greatly enjoy watching "The Master" at work.

There are some receptions where I have to work hard and make tough (and sometimes "gutsy") decisions on how to motivate a group of friends and family out to the dance floor.

Other times, there are receptions like this one... Where I feel I must pour buckets of water around the edges of the dance floor to "prevent the fire from spreading"! What an OUTSTANDING group of guests!

We are extremely pleased with the job that Steve did at our wedding! Steve was set up and professionally dressed at our reception before we even arrived at Spring Mill! Throughout the entire night, we felt he did everything we asked. We were very pleased that he was making sure everything was perfect. On our wedding day, Steve played all the songs we wanted to be a part of our wedding. He also had a FANTASTIC idea to get everyone on the dance floor which worked PERFECTLY! He was extremely flexible during the party and went above and beyond our expectations! We would recommend him to any of our friends or family. We are looking forward to seeing Steve in September at a friends wedding! Many of our guests have told us they were extremely impressed with him when he came around to tables to ask if the music was too loud or soft. He was very professional and personable throughout the night and was a joy to have at our special day!

I absolutely LOVE the Manor House at Commonwealth National Golf. There is nothing quite like the feeling of celebrating a reception in a facility designed to feel like a home away from home. In my opinion, it's the more unique facilities that encourage guests to really relax, unwind, and just "be themselves".

Ellen and Curt's photographer, Ken Lee of Marsella Studio, is someone I always enjoy working with. He not only takes great photos, but is someone I can count on to always be nearby, ready to capture the next important moment.

I can't tell you how many times I have searched for a missing photographer... It's a little stressful.

Do you see the video below? That was the second song played after the bridal party was introduced and Ellen and Curt shared their first dance. You read that right. The second song after the first dance.

Their friends and family came to party!

From dancing to singing to laughing and shouting, there was activity on the dance floor nearly all night long! By the way, Curt... I personally enjoyed hearing you and your best man singing some Bonnie Tyler. It's been awhile since I've played "Total Eclipse of the Heart".

Mike and I are very happy with the job Steve did at our wedding. We knew going into our wedding what a wonderful DJ Steve is since he has done several of our friends and family members weddings. He is very lighthearted and easy going. I felt he hit the nail on the head with the songs. I had specified several introductions and song combinations that I felt might be difficult for Steve to be able to do. He did exactly what I had asked and hoped he would do and more! My wedding day was perfect and Steve helped make it that way. I would definitely recommend Steve to anyone who wants to have a GREAT time at their wedding!

Located in scenic Bucks County, Spring Mill Manor greets every guests with a large comfortable reception entrance with twin staircases and marble floors. Very nice.

Megan and Jamie had selected Bella Pictures to chronicle their wedding day via photography and videography. They did an awesome job! It was a real pleasure working with two seasoned professionals who were always on top of things.

This was an AWESOME wedding! Everything flowed along nicely, mostly due to the tireless efforts of the banquet director, Joan and her amazing staff. Joan runs a tight ship!

Megan and Jamie had wedding guests joining them from around the world! If I remember correctly... there were guests from England, Ireland, and even Paris!

There were several things that stood out at this great celebration, but one of the biggest was Toby the Dancing Machine! Megan and Jamie had a young relative from jolly old England who put on a dancing display to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean".

The dance floor was bursting at the seams from the moment dinner ended until the last song was played! I really enjoyed looking out at the dance floor at any given moment and seeing a sea of smiling, laughing, and genuinely thrilled faces!

The professionals at Project Wedding notified us this morning that Silver Sound had been selected as a winner of the 2008 Best of Project Wedding awards.

It's a beautiful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a great setting for a beautiful wedding.

The owners of Brandywine Manor House Inn, Gordon and Nancy Eck, are really great, hands-on hosts. They are some of the most pleasant people in this industry, who really care about the comfort and complete satisfaction of every one of their guests. It is always a pleasure to spend a little time with them before the events to catch up on things.

In addition to working alongside the very talented Andrew Huth, I also had the honor of working once again with the AWESOME catering staff of Robert Ryan Catering. Their food, service, and attentiveness to detail and presentation are OUTSTANDING!

Elaine and Michael had partying in mind when they began planning their reception. Elaine went as far as to purchase some sombreros and tell me about a creative and fun way to get everyone up on the dance floor!

I have been entertaining wedding for over 15 years and have NEVER had a bride who took so much initiative and had the foresight to plan for that moment where we would transition from dinner to dancing. She's very creative!

Here's something else I should mention... While making my way around the room, I discovered that there were FIVE COUPLES in attendance for whom I had provided wedding entertainment! That is easily a record for me!

Much like the weddings they host (where two people become one), the Villanova Conference Center and Montrose Mansion are two beautiful hosts combined into one extravagant facility. The circa-1914 stone mansion is is set on wooded acres and is surrounded by ponds, gardens, sculptures and plenty of backdrops for an outdoor ceremony.

It is always a distinct pleasure entertaining alongside the very talented staff at VCC, especially when working with my good friend Tim Sweeney.

Tim can be seen (at any given moment) moving around the room, helping to expedite and deliver flawless events. He is truly great at what he does!

To be honest, I didn't expect the crowd to be so energized! They filled the dance floor and stayed there all night! It's groups of friends and families like this that make me look like a better DJ than I truly am. It was a great reception!

If you look at their photos, you'll see two bicycles, decorated with ribbons and two license plates that read "JUST" and "MARRIED". At 10:00 PM, they mounted their bicycles, waved "goodbye" to everyone, then rode away. Since they're both triathletes, it was pretty iconic of their relationship. Awesome.

I greatly admire unique venues like The Lake House Inn in Perkasie. In addition to being nestled in a semi-secluded area and surrounded by the placid waters of Lake Nockamixon, it is similar to Cairnwood and Knowlton Mansion in the sense that it is a "home away from home".

When you treat your guests to a reception at the Lake House Inn, you are exposing them to the artistic and flavorful culinary creations of Jeffrey Miller Catering, the luxury of a relaxing atmosphere, and all the natural beauty their eyes can take in.

I had the privilege to work with one of the very few photographers I confidently recommend to my clients, Mike Kehr. I heavily recommend you check out his web site and his blog. He is truly one of the very best artists and photojournalists I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Now... on to the matter at hand: Adrienne and Mark's wedding reception was a BLAST! To quote one of the banquet directors from the catering staff:

"I have never seen absolutely every person on the dance floor from the moment dinner ended until the last song was played. These guys are AMAZING!"

It really was. From the moment Mark "decapitated" the Nittany Lion groom's cake until the final song was played, there was not a single person sitting at a table. It was awesome!

Talamore Country Club is a beautiful venue! The wrought iron stair rails, wall-to-wall hard wood floors, giant cathedral-like windows... It's awe-inspiring.

The day began with an elegant outdoor wedding service, surrounded in lush and well-kept grounds. I must say again, the pain-staking care that is given to the greenery here is quite obvious.

The music for the ceremony and cocktail hour was provided by Sophisticated Strings, a very talented group who does a superior job at providing a great soundtrack for people's wedding memories.

While the guests enjoyed their cocktail hour, Rachel and John could be seen taking some fun post-ceremony photos with an accomplished photographer named Douglas Lockard. When the formal photos were finished, Douglas and I had an opportunity to share some stories of weddings past and get coordinated for the upcoming reception time.

John currently serves in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant, thus Rachel and John's entrance into the reception was complete with a saber arc that flanked the main staircase on either side. Before Rachel and John were allowed to pass by each pair of swords, the swords were lowered and the bride and groom were instructed by the detail staff to share a kiss. At the end, John's friend, Lt. Higgins "welcomed" Rachel to the Navy with a well-placed swat to her bustle with his sword. It's a pretty cool tradition I always enjoy witnessing.

Since it was a late-afternoon into early evening Sunday reception, it was a pretty laid-back affair. However, there was plenty of dancing and fun had by all. But... it was not exclusively ME who was providing the entertainment.

At Talamore Country Club, there resides one of the most energetic, charismatic, and downright awesome banquet directors in the business. His name... Garland. This guy is the proverbial MAN! What a pleasure to work with such a passionate and engaged professional like Garland! I look forward to the opportunity of working alongside him again in the future. He was GREAT!

What an amazing reception venue! This giant ballroom is the perfect location for large groups of friends and family celebrating a once in a lifetime event. This ballroom's wide open space and uncluttered decor is a fantastic canvas for specialty lighting, especially uplighting.

Melissa and Daniel's cocktail hour was observed in a remote ballroom, complete with a concert-grade pianist. Very elegant.

There was some strange weather on this day! Out of nowhere, an intense rainstorm flew in and doused the country club in some pretty hard-driving rain. In a matter of minutes, it was gone as fast as it had come and was replaced by a warm sun.

The reception moved along very nicely, thanks largely to a very efficient and well-managed group of service staff. I feel inclined to point out that the maître d' at Deerfield, a gentleman by the name of Steve, had a very effective managerial style.

I always find it a pleasure to work with another professional who treats his/her staff with respect. You might be surprised to find how rare this actually can be. Steve's ability to "get the most out of his staff" was a luxury I am sure the bride and groom unknowingly appreciated.

One very cool highlight I should mention... Because Daniel is a Delaware State Trooper, during the removal of the garter, the dance floor was rushed by police who handcuffed Daniel and made him remove the garter without the benefit of using his hands. Use your imagination...

Melissa and Daniel have a GREAT group of friends and family! With the exception of a small "cigar session" held on the terrace, they were ALL OVER the dance floor from start to finish!

Personally, I had a GREAT TIME!

RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve is one of the most beautiful venues around, hands down. Their immaculate grounds and spacious countryside surroundings make you feel very comfortable and "at home".

As guests began arriving and enjoying the cocktail hour, Jenny and Jeff made their way out to the course (with their bridal party) for some candid and posed group shots.

Their photographers, Jason Levan and Nick Spence of Ultimate Images are two of my most favorite shooters to work with.

Their relaxed and easy-going approach really encourages the bridal party to loosen up and flash some full and genuine smiles.

After the introductions, Jenny, Jeff and I had worked up a great surprise for their friends and families.

The first dance song began while Jenny and Jeff shared their first dance as husband and wife. About halfway through, the song began to "skip". All of the sudden, the "needle scraped across the record", then the "Cupid Shuffle" began. Jenny and Jeff's bridal party joined the bride and groom on the dance floor to do the Cupid Shuffle while up on a screen (hanging above my DJ equipment) a video played. On the video was Jenny's elementary school class doing the Cupid Shuffle. To hear what the track sounded like, click here.

The crowd exploded with excitement.

From that point on, the night was an overwhelming success!

Despite a torrential downpour, Alicia and Dean's wedding at the Manor House at Commonwealth was fantastic.

The day began with Alicia and Dean's wedding ceremony. Originally slated to take place on the lush green grass of the golf course, it was moved indoors. I had the pleasure of spending some time before the ceremony with my good friend at Shaw Strings, Virginia Schawacker.

Virginia (affectionately known by everyone as "Mom") and her team had all learned to play some selections by U2, Verve, and Peter Gabriel for the ceremony. I must admit, nothing compares to hearing a live string performance of "Bitter Sweet Symphony".

Before Alicia and Dean's ceremony, I presented Alicia with a vial of rain water I collected as both a "good luck charm" and offered for her to save it for the day they would Christen their first child.

I remarked that while many people might say "rain on your wedding day is good luck", no one ever explains why. My feeling is that since rain is water and water is the the source of all life, rain might just be God's way of saying he is going to breathe new life into an already strong relationship. It seemed to put the weather in a whole new perspective for her and eventually, Dean.

By the time the dancing hours were winding down, it was clear that everyone in attendance was very happy and had the highest of hopes and expectations for an awesome couple.

Wow. I haven't had a single blog update since January! What can I say other than "I'm sorry" and "I'm amazed that Blogger hasn't closed this place down, due to abandonment.".

So... Without further ado, let's get down to business!

Hosting your wedding ceremony and/or reception at Cairnwood is like having your event in a wealthy family member's home. This home is built like an French palace!

The reception began with guests arriving and being escorted to the tented terrace. The talented artists at Eventions provided a great visual experience in the form of specialty lighting on the canvas above. As the sun went down, it looked almost as if their guests were dining under the stars. Amazing.

Friends and family were also treated to the performance of live music in the form of a string quartet and live vocalist. It was a very classy addition to the affair. I just wish I could remember the name of the group.

Jessica and Lloyd had also secured one of the most awe-inspiring photographers I have ever known, Cliff Mautner. Cliff continuously encounters the highest expectations and surpasses them with ease. I would encourage you to check out his work on his blog.

I had an outstanding time being a part of this wedding celebration! Considering the layout, it's always a very unique experience at Cairnwood. The real challenge is having the ability to move guests from one part of the mansion to the next, without making them feel "herded". In the end, my experience at this difficult venue proved to be a great asset in entertaining this wild crew. What a great party!

The first wedding of 2009 has come and gone. And with the beginning of a new year comes the start of a marriage of two really great people.

What can I say about the Loch Nairn Golf Club's Greathouse other than "underrated"?

I really must compliment the staff at the Greathouse for being so efficient and friendly. The food is great and they go out of their way to accommodate intimate groups of family and friends.

The feeling that emanates from this facility is build right into the name. It's like celebrating in a finely furnished home!

After Chris' son delivered a stellar toast and some dinner was served, we danced the night away. To be honest, I was surprised at how quickly their guests filled the dance floor.

Susan and Chris' party was composed of some great party-goers who came to have fun. It was great!

I love when a group of friends and family come together to celebrate a wedding reception with absolutely no reservations, with an all out effort to have fun and enjoy the company of others.

Despite a very mild distraction outside the ballroom, every nuance of the event went off without a hitch.

Beginning with a beautiful ceremony officiated by two pastors, Allison and Justin's event had a real natural feel with plenty of smiles to be seen throughout the room.... Especially when a few people noticed that one of the Unity Candles was leaning forward, bit by bit, getting ready to fall and burn down a 200 year old building...

Ah, wedding memories...

Around the middle of the evening, Allison stepped out of the room briefly to change into a more comfortable evening dress. This is slowly becoming a very popular trend. Some brides feel like a change of attire is not only sort of glamorous, but also allows them a little more comfort to fully enjoy the evening.

Near the end of the night, several members of Allison's extended family gathered on the dance floor to serenade Allison with a family traditional song "You've Lost That Loving Feelin'".

I'll admit, I was laughing quite a bit when I saw sunglasses and Blues Brother's style fedoras being handed out.

A Passionate Event At The Manor House

It's not often that I get to perform at a wedding where everyone in the room is so definitively passionate and completely focused on the bride and groom and the celebration at hand.

More often than not, I notice that a majority of guests will divide their attention between the newlyweds and each other (which is totally cool and to be expected).

However, on this night all eyes were locked on the bride and groom and their every move. I can honestly say that I've never seen anything like it.

One especially endearing moment occurred just before Laurie shared a dance with her father.

After surrendering my microphone to her father, he shared a few words about not only his daughter and her childhood, but also led into their dance by singing the first verse of "Daddy's Little Girl" to Laurie.

"Shredding" At The Wedding

This was a "high octane" wedding! Not to get too far ahead of myself, but the title is a pretty good description of what was going on all night on the dance floor.

First things first... The Desmond recently has undertaken a truly transforming renovation to their already decadent facility! It is very near completion, with an entirely new area for guests to enjoy the cocktail hour under a glass ceiling. At night, it looks absolutely amazing!

Since it was Independence Weekend, I decided to surprise Karen and Jamie by bringing star gobos to project on the wall. As you can see in the photo on the right, it definitely added to their first dance.

So what do I mean by shredding"?

Check out the photo on the left... Jamie possesses the uncommon ability to play a professional-grade leg guitar. It sparked a slew of imitators, but no one could replicate Jamie's "Angus Young" intensity.

When we wrapped up the night by playing a dedication to Jamie mom, the song "Mother" by Danzig (a first for me at a wedding), I don't think his right foot touched the ground for more than 10 seconds after the song began!

There is nothing more festive than a Fourth of July wedding! How can you beat having free fireworks going off nearby your reception?

Jessica and Steve had really lucked out since the Borough of Phoenixville had decided that this year's fireworks display would be moved closer to the city's main artery, Bridge Street.

Jessica and Steve's friends and families were a complete class act, enthusiastically celebrating the great day without getting "out of hand".

Something I have noticed recently is that guests seem to be getting a little more inebriated than in the past, causing minor situations to escalate pretty quickly. Thankfully, I have not been involved when things go awry, but it can be a bit disappointing to witness when people seemingly forget the reason why they're attending the celebration.

Again, the guests at this wedding were awesome and a lot of fun!

I am very thankful to have had the privilege to entertain such a great family. To be honest, I didn't have to do much in the way of entertaining, since they were almost completely content and easy-going to begin with!

I wish all my events had guests like this event did!

I love the Radnor Hotel.

The lush gardens, the stately architecture, the precision of the service, the gracious nature of the staff... the attentiveness to perfection.... It's one of the very best locations around, period.

Before I get started in describing their day, I must point out that the Radnor Hotel is very fortunate to have a team like Steve, Brandon, and Melissa to make sure everything is running smoothly and without a snag. They fly around the room almost invisibly, ensuring every event is perfect. They are great to work with!

Originally, the cocktail hour was to take place out on the Garden Terrace, however a combination of rain and brutally hot and humid weather forced the first hour into the Garden Room. I can safely say that everyone appreciated being indoors where it was cool and comfortable.

When the dance floor opened, we started out playing some Oldies for the older crowd and later moved into some Classic Hip-Hop and Dance music. I must admit, I can't remember the last time I played "California Love" at a wedding (see the video below).

The RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve is one of my favorite locations to entertain an elegant event. From their palatial ballroom housing a giant dance floor and beautiful furnishings to the outstanding and attentive focus and passion for the satisfaction of everyone in the room, RiverCrest Golf Club is, in my opinion, the measurement for all Chester County ballrooms.

Because Heather & Eric met in Wildwood, NJ, guests entered the beach-themed cocktail area, they were greet with a glass of wine and a smile. I think it is the small things a facility does that helps guests feel completely catered to.

After entering the ballroom and sharing in their first dance, dinner began with salads and a side of slideshow.

One of Heather and Eric's friends prepared a great collection of photos from the bride and groom's childhood, including college friends and extended family. Very nice!

The wedding slideshow is something that has recently been gaining a lot of momentum. I've been seeing one out of every five weddings including this sort of visual treat just as dinner begins.

Eric and all his groomsmen showed up to the reception wearing brand-new, immaculate-white Nike Air Force One Wildwood sneakers. This might be a dumb question for me to ask, but I wonder if they realized the shoes they were wearing shared the name of the town where Heather and "Greedy" first met?

From start to finish, it was an enjoyable evening for everyone there. I mean, considering the number of "high fives" I seemed to be continuously receiving throughout the night, I think everyone had a great time!

In my humble opinion, The Manor House at Commonwealth is one of the most underrated facilities around. Housed in a humble, yet stately 18th century fieldstone farmhouse, the service and cuisine never seems to fall short of guests' high expectations.

Despite the rustic exterior, the interior is has a contemporary design, holding spacious and beautiful rooms for hosting the most elaborate events.

Candace and Benjamin's day began with a beautiful outdoor ceremony, with Candace and Ben standing nearby the pond at the Manor House.

After the ceremony and cocktail hour, the bridal party excitedly entered the ballroom. Candace and Ben shared the first dance, Candace danced with her father, then Ben danced with his mother to a unique song.

When Ben was a little boy, his father (a recording artist) was playing a song which Ben decided to join in on. The result was a very moving song, with Ben's father singing in harmony with a six year-old Ben! Awesome!

It was a real honor having the opportunity to provide entertainment for what seemed to be a very close-knit group of family and friends. It was hard to determine where one family ended and the other began!

Starting with a decadent cocktail hour in the adjoining Fountain Room, guests eagerly anticipated the moment the doors to the main ballroom would fling open, revealing a well-appointed setting for an awesome party!

Kristen and Joseph's friends and family were intensely focused on the party, making it very obvious that we could not open the dance floor fast enough!

After the cake was cut and the dance floor was opened, it was like the dam has broken and people couldn't help but flow onto the dance floor!

The mood in the room was one of great joy and celebration and people stepped up, one after another, requesting song after song to dance the night away!

On a summer evening in 1887, C. Howard Schemerhorn (who later became Commodore of the Ocean City Yacht Club from 1904-07) and others met with intent of finding a place where, "They could keep their boats in safety and not be compelled on Low Tide to wade out in the mud to get their boats." - Yacht Club Log Book-April 1916.

Family picnics were popular in those days, and two or three families would unite in a joint outing, fishing and clamming from the club. This location was the center of boating life in Ocean City. On a nice day, large crowds would gather at the foot of 12th Street.

Since that time (over 100 years ago!), the Ocean City Yacht Club has hosted numerous special events for people seeking a well-appointed yet laid-back atmosphere, finished off with a spectacular view of the Great Egg Harbor Bay.

Beginning with a beautiful ceremony on the beaches of Ocean City, Stephanie and Tim's relaxing affair was one surrounded by enthusiastic and jovial friends and family. One of the defining characteristics of the Jersey Shore is it's uncanny sense of family. It's almost as though everyone you meet in that area is a long, lost "cuz".

Stephanie and Tim's guests were no exception. Right until the end, when we viewed an AWESOME "B.I.G. Video Show" of Stephanie and Tim's wedding ceremony (compliments of Kenneth Stillman Video), everyone was arm in arm, standing close to one another and having a great time!

Located just 20 minutes from Philadelphia, Aronimink Golf Club's newly renovated, Tudor style ballroom can accommodate crowds large and small. Upon arrival at the wedding reception, Mandy and Bob's guests were welcomed by a very courteous staff before being served exquisite hors d’oeuvres.

The most memorable phrase I heard at Mandy and Bob's reception made it's way to the title of this post.

Bob's mother came up to me just as dinner was getting started and requested I play some up-tempo music like Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" and Stevie Wonder's "I Wish". When I pointed out the entrees that were being delivered to the guests, she looked me square in the eye and said in a jokingly serious tone, "Forget dinner... We came to dance!". I laughed and obliged. Not too surprisingly, she was right on the money.

Maybe I am just having a run of good luck with "dancing" crowds (knock on wood), but when I hit "Gimme Some Lovin'" by the Spencer Davis Group, the dance floor exploded!

At the beginning of the night, I looked around with mild skepticism about going the distance on this extended reception, but ten minutes after opening the dance floor, any dillusion of an early departure floated completely away! I don't think even one guest left the dance floor before 11:00 PM!

I always look forward to the weddings I get to entertain at La Massaria. In addition to it's relaxing atmosphere and elegant old world style, the banquet staff there is very attentive to detail and always available to satiate the needs of every guest.

When I entertain at some other facilities, I often find it frustrating when I am unable to locate the banquet director. At every event, I strive to work in a concerted effort with the banquet manager to orchestrate and execute a flawless delivery of the day. Whenever I am at La Massaria, Brad Williams is almost always just an arm's length away, directing every nuance of the reception.

Although the afternoon sun was blazing in the sky, everything inside La Massaria was cool and comfortable with the drinks continuously flowing and the food bountifully being served.

By the way, what is it about Penn Staters that makes them so wild? I cannot remember EVER meeting someone who attended Penn State who I found to be boring and/or lethargic. It felt like a blazing inferno outside and that did not slow anyone down the slightest bit! The dance floor was bouncing all evening long with only one break from the dancing for a signature sparklers photo taken on the putting green outside; with all the guest smiling and waving from the windows above while the photos were taken down below. Awesome!

The only thing missing from this event was the Nittany Lion doing backflips on the dance floor!

The glorious Gold Ballroom at the Hotel du Pont is a French Neoclassic ballroom, with gilded rosettes, glittering chandeliers and bas-reliefs of famous women including Helen of Troy and Cleopatra, and could not be more festive or extravagant.

I have said it before and I will say it again: If you have dreamed of a wedding day as near to perfection as humanly possible, the only location to consider is the Hotel du Pont. Their unprecedented attentiveness to detail is unparalleled. Their ability to satiate every need allows a bride and groom to relax and savor every moment.

Kelly and Dayne met while attending Lehigh University, both spending most of their time on the basketball courts, playing in front of thousands of screaming fans and the cameras of ESPN.

Dayne and Kelly spent a lot of time preparing an outstanding visual presentation for their friends and family, producing full-motion videos for their bridal party's introductions, the parents dances, and a ten minute video documenting their basketball careers, their lives, and Dayne's proposal to Kelly via a beach plane banner in Ocean City!

You didn't have to know Dayne and Kelly personally to be moved by the creativity displayed in their videos.

Designed by the renowned architectural firm of Carrére and Hastings to be a home for the industrialist John Pitcairn and his young family, Cairnwood evokes the grandeur of the Gilded Age with its intimacy, beauty and elegance. While it maintains the atmosphere of a private home, it is available for events such as weddings, corporate entertaining, fund raising and social events of all kinds.

Because Cairnwood is a mansion, with its grand staircase, balconies and gardens, it becomes "yours" for the duration of the event. It feels as if you are welcoming guests to your very own home: one that’s spacious and warm and can hold all those you love on such a momentous occasion.

Jenn and Chris' friends and family made their way throughout the manor, enjoying a fine dining experience in several rooms (and under a tent covering the veranda) throughout the building, followed by dancing in the Library.

Several guests also took advantage of a special area prepared for them by the bride and groom, a cigar bar with a selection of top shelf bourbons and Ashton cigars. It was an instant transport back in time to an era enjoyed by the family who commissioned the building of Cairnwood. Personally, I thought it was a pretty ingenious touch of creativity.

The Great Hall hosted the bride and groom's first dance and a decadent display of desserts and assortment of coffees.

At the end, guests left the event feeling completely satiated and brimming over with memories of a lavish and fun affair!

Dining And Dancing On The Delaware River

Since the launching of the Moshulu (pronounced Mo-shoe'-loo) in 1904, she has had a long and exciting career on the seas working the ports of Europe, South America, Australia, America and Africa. She was confiscated by the Americans in one war and by the Germans in the next. She has traveled around Cape Horn 54 times. She has hauled coal and coke, copper ore and nitrate, lumber and grain. In lesser days, she has served as a floating warehouse. In grander days, she won the last great grain race in 1939. Today, the Moshulu is the largest four-masted sailing ship in the world still afloat.

On the day of Laura & Joseph's wedding, the weather was a very comfortable compliment to their open-air, top deck cocktail hour. Guests enjoyed cocktails and a spectacular view of the Delaware River, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, and the cityscape of Camden across the water.

When the friends and family made their way to the mid-deck's Orchid Room, Laura & Joseph's friend, Vince Schneider, was all ready to go for playing the music accompanying their first dance as husband and wife.

As you can see from the photos, the dance floor was pretty well packed from the moment dinner ended until it was time to head out!

On a side note, a quick comment about the cuisine at the Moshulu... While I was carrying my equipment aboard the Moshulu, I was stopped by a passerby who asked how I felt about the food served on the Moshulu.

"It depends...", I replied. "What dish stands out to you the most?", I asked, pointing at the menu mounted outside.

He asked if I was fond of the steak, to which I replied, "I would not recommend the steak."

When he asked why, I told him, "Because if you eat the Moshulu's steak, you will never want to eat steak anywhere else but here, ever again.".

In all seriousness, the food prepared by the chefs of the Moshulu is truly outstanding. I whole-heartedly recommend you find time to experience the work of their culinary masters!

Bruce Keslar, founder of the National Association of Mobile Entertainers, passed away last Saturday while returning home from his son's wedding reception.

Bruce started N.A.M.E. with one purpose: "To provide mobile entertainers access to all the tools they need to build, grow, and sustain their businesses."

All my thoughts and prayers go out to Bruce's family during this time of sadness.

Dear NAME Members, Sponsors, friends and family,

It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Bruce Keslar, founder and National Director of NAME this past Saturday May 17th 2008. Bruce suffered a massive heart attack and passed on at Montgomery County Hospital.

Bruce dedicated his mind, body, soul and his life to the entertainment industry. Bruce was the founder and driving force behind both the original ADJA and more recently of NAME, as well as the recipient of The Lifetime Achievement Award from Mobile Beat Magazine for his dedication and tireless work within the DJ and Entertainment Industry. Additionally, Bruce loved working as an entertainer and performed at over 2000 weddings during his 30 year entertainment career. On a daily basis Bruce continually sought to grow and enhance the DJ entertainment industry through strategic networking agreements, education, and reputable top quality entertainer benefits.

His vision and legacy lives on today thru NAME (National Association of Mobile Entertainers), which is quite possibly one of his proudest business accomplishments. NAME's ongoing growth, existing strength and responsive corporate staff are a testament to Bruce's vision and fortitude. The Association has been in the Keslar family for 17 years and will very proudly remain in the Keslar family. Carol his wife, whom many of you have most likely met at numerous conventions, will assume a more active corporate role as President. She will continue to be involved with Bruce's best intention and will continue in making Bruce's lifetime achievements grow even stronger.

Beth Price, who has been with NAME for over 7 years, will lead on a daily basis in the role of Managing National Director. Since NAME is still the only association with a full time staff, all operations, benefits and programs will remain intact and active, as Bruce would have wanted it. There will be no interruption in coverage's, renewals or new company, affiliate or corporate member enrollment. A more detailed corporate press release outlining our staff and modified responsibilities will appear on our web site within the next few days and an overview/tribute of Bruce's life will appear in our next magazine issue.

For questions or concerns feel free to contact our national office, however, we respectfully request that items not of immediate concern wait until we finish celebrating his life.

Bruce left behind a loving wife, Carol, 4 children and 7 granddaughters. We will all be celebrating the life of Bruce Keslar on Tuesday, May 27th, 10am to 12pm at the John R. Freed Funeral Home located on 124 N. Easton Rd. in Glenside, PA 19038.

Immediately following the viewing we will proceed to for the burial at The Hillside Cemetery on the corner of Susquehanna and Easton Rd. in Roslyn, PA.

This affair was beautifully appointed, not only by the elegant venue, but also with the superior level of floral aesthetics provided by the nearly incomparable Flowers By Yukie. Swathi and Michael's largely Indian group of friends and family were not shy about celebrating the special occasion, filling the dance floor early on and enjoying a mixture of Bhangra, Hindi, and American music.

It didn't matter what was playing, EVERYONE was dancing non-stop until the night ended. It was a lot of fun for me too, since I don't often get to play music from India. You can check out some Bhangra music by either clicking here or watching the video below.

By the way, if you decide to check out the photos I shot at Swathi and Michael's wedding, be sure your speakers are on. As I usually do, I played the bride and groom's first dance song as the very last song of the evening. However, this time I played a special version of "What A Wonderful World" that includes an introduction by Louis Armstrong, explaining why he sang that song. It will almost definitely change your perception of what I formerly thought of as a quaint little song.

The Knot, the #1 wedding website and most trusted multimedia wedding authority, announced the arrival on newsstands of The Knot Best of Weddings magazine, a "by brides for brides" guide to the top wedding sites, photographers, florists, and more in over 40 key cities across the United States.

Among the list of picks was Silver Sound!

The Knot conducted a massive survey of 25,000 recent brides and grooms-the first of its kind-to capture detailed feedback on every wedding business that couples hired, from reception sites to planners, cakes and limo companies. The Radnor Valley Country Club, situated in the heart of Villanova, is an elegant Georgian style mansion with Contemporary flavor. As you enter the foyer, guests are welcomed with first-class sophistication, polished marble floors, and a cozy gas fireplace. The adjoining cocktail areas set the mood for any function with their oak wood beams and old world charm. These rooms also feature a skylight, a generously sized marble topped bar, opening to a picturesque veranda, perfect for an outdoor wedding ceremony or reception.

When Elizabeth and Chris' family and friends arrived, they were greeted by a string quartet playing elegant classical pieces, setting the mood for a high-class affair. When the bride and groom reached the country club, they took a stroll around the lush grounds and took several photos with one of my favorite photographers, Annie Hosfeld.

The guests were very vocal with their happiness with the new couple, sharing in five different toasts throughout the night. In addition, the night was filled with both American and Armenian music, with the dance floor seemingly always filled.

Because of where my equipment was placed in the spacious ballroom, I decided to treat the ballroom to four-corner sound, allowing the entire room to be covered in a comfortable level of sound. It kept the dance floor bouncing, but allowed everyone to speak with each other and not feel the necessity to raise their voice. Comfortable and classy. It worked out great.

I also want to extend special thanks to Stacey Herreid from Create The Moment for helping make this event flow so smoothly!

While I often try to establish a great relationship with each of my clients, it's not often that I make such a personal connection with a bride and groom. Right from the start, I genuinely enjoyed meeting and getting to know Kimberly and Michael.

The day was spiced with personal touches and flair all throughout the entire event. From the breathtaking, room-transforming look of the uplighting (provided by my friends at Eventions) to the origami paper cranes scattered on the guest tables, there were expressions of the couple everywhere you looked. The paper cranes were an observance of Kimberly's heritage and her dearly departed grandmother.

An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. A thousand paper cranes is also traditionally given as a wedding gift by the folder, who is wishing a thousand years of happiness and prosperity upon the couple. It can also be gifted to a new baby for long life and good luck.

On a personal note, I was very humbled to find out that Kimberly had taken it upon herself to assume the exhausting life of an individual who works with mentally challenged children. As some of you reading this know, my son is diagnosed as being Autistic. It is because of people like Kimberly that children like my son can live a more well-adjusted life.

As thanks to Kimberly and her husband, I presented them with a gift. On their wedding day, it had been raining all day. Early in the morning, I placed a vial outside to collect the rain as it fell. By the time I was ready to leave, the vial was filled. After their ceremony, I presented the vial to Kimberly and Michael, telling them that on the day of their first child's Christening, they could baptise their baby with water that fell from above on the day they were married.

People who are not personally affected by Autism cannot imagine how hard it is for professionals like Kimberly, let alone the parents of children with Autism. It is for that reason that I was so thankful to be a part of their wedding day.

A New Beginning For Old Friends

This past weekend, I had the honor of performing for a couple I knew personally. I have to tell you, nothing is more nerve-racking that performing for friends or family.

On top of that, I knew a lot of the guests, as well! Once upon a time, I used to DJ at a place in Malvern called Flanigan's Boathouse and was known by the name "Scuba Steve". Sigh. Don't ask...

In any event, the day began with a ceremony officiated by Rebecca's Uncle Ron, who was ordained specifically for the occasion of Rebecca and Brian's wedding day. It was definitely one of the more meaningful ceremonies I have ever witnessed.

After the ceremony, the friends and family made their way to a decadent cocktail hour with a pretty big assortment of fine foods. It was very classy, to say the least.

I noticed a great deal of conversations and photos going on throughout the evening, both on the dance floor and off. I have to point out that even though there may have been times in the evening that the crowd was not dancing, if you were to look around, you would have seen that they are having just as much fun as if they were dancing.

Hands down, Rebecca and Brian have some of the most intimate and laid-back friends and family members I have ever had the honor of celebrating with.

He really seemed to know just how to get the party started and when to slow it down. The best part was when he brought every person onto the dance floor, surrounding me and Brian, for a serious moment, even having everyone close their eyes and send us good vibes... only to suddenly break into a fast dance song which got everyone moving - and it only got better from there! When he asked for five "hot" guys to come out on the dance floor (which eventually led into a conga line), it was about the last five guys in the room I would have guessed would've obliged him, which only goes to show that a good time was had BY ALL. So many people came up to us and told us how awesome our DJ was and we agree. We will recommend him to anyone who is planning a wedding or any other event requiring music. It simply wouldn't have been the same without Steve being there - it was one of the best decisions we made during this wonderful time. Thank you Steve!!!!"

West Virginia Comes To Downingtown

It has been a long time since I have provided wedding entertainment direction in the Downingtown Country Club! A lot has changed since my last visit. Most noticeably, a new terrace for the guests to enjoy cocktail hour was a great addition to an already beautiful facility.

To be completely honest, I wasn't sure what to expect with the evening's events since a majority of the information was provided the day before the event. Now, I realize that Eliza and Chris were so relaxed about the planning because they knew, better than anyone, that the party would be a smashing success no matter what.

With a large group of the guests made up of West Viriginia University alumni, the party went from zero to sixty faster than a Ferrari. Wow.

One of the most memorable spots in the evening was, believe it or not, the Chicken Dance. Hold off on the moans and groans for a second... Eliza was completely against the playing of the song, but her friends, family, and groom rallied and convinced her to allow it to be played. I think Eliza realized that I held off the Mountaineers as long as I could.

She caved in, the song played, and everyone excitedly took part in one of the oldest wedding reception traditions I am aware of.

In the end, it was a great affair that kept the dance floor bouncing until the very end (when we played "Take Me Home, Country Roads").

We decided that we would defer to the DJ and let him choose pretty much every song except for the biggies. It was a real measure of trust and boy did it pay off. We had two people come up to us during dinner to tell us that I had picked amazing songs. While I appreciated that they thought so highly of me, I had to admit that Steve was picking them all and putting together an amazing mix. Steve opened the dance floor in a way that none of us had ever seen, and we have had SO much feedback since then. It was so emotional! Throughout the entire reception he had great ideas for us to make our wedding funny, special and memorable. He was a great director, right down to the very second when the last song had played and he decided to throw in the WVU fight song for good measure. We are beyond pleased with the service that was provided to us, and would be more than glad to speak to any potential client on his behalf!"

Situated in the historic district of Doylestown, the Aldie Mansion is one of the most natural feeling and elegant facilities I have the privilege of playing at. It is the kind of ballroom that a guest can really feel at home at and truly enjoy the celebration.

Jamie and Chris' friends and family were just plain awesome! They began arriving and immediately took to greeting each other with hugs and smiles, even taking a moment here and there to introduce themselves to me. That doesn't often happen. Usually, the guests are more focused on having conversations with each other and don't take note of the professionals in the room. Again, not the case with their guests.

At one point, one of the servers came up to me and asked "Aren't these people nice?". Very cool.

After a beautiful ceremony at the arboretum, the guests enjoyed some cocktails on the terrace, then came into the conservatory for dinner and dancing.

As you might notice from the photos, it was a really tight-knit group that had a fantastic evening of dancing and catching up with one another.

I really enjoyed this wedding and felt it flew by really quick! There were no "dead spots" in the evening!

Lately, I seem to be surrounded by nothing but the most laid-back and friendly people! Not only Stephanie and Jon, but the entire guest list was very genuinely happy, relaxed, and ready to party!

I always look forward to the opportunities where I get to work with my good friend, Brad Williams, Director of Catering at La Massaria.

I have known Brad for almost ten years and truly appreciate his precision and attention to detail. His ability to deliver the dinner expeditiously is nearly unmatched in the Delaware Valley! You can most assuredly expect to have your dance time maximized when Brad and his staff are on the job.

The event flowed nicely between the first and second floors as cocktail hour ended and the dinner and dancing portion of the evening arrived. Once again, two days in a row, the crowd was chomping at the bit, ready to get out on the dance floor with little effort coming from my direction.

As a matter of fact, I'm just going to go ahead and extend an open invitation to the guests from both weddings this weekend to attend ALL of my weddings. Just kidding...

As you can see from the photos, everyone had an awesome time, including a "worn-out-at-the-end-of-the-night" bride and groom. They were the kind of storybook couple that you know is going to have a great marriage!

A Beautiful Evening In A Palatial Ballroom

You might think that with the number of times I have provided wedding entertainment direction in the Mendenhall Inn's Grand Ballroom that it would have "lost the magic" by now. To be completely honest, it really has not.

The staff at the Mendenhall Inn continues to evolve and deliver exactly the kind of wedding reception that a bride and groom deserve. Rigo and his staff continuously keep a close watch on every nuance of the evening, making it very important to stay in constant communication with the other professionals in the room to make certain the night goes off without a hitch.

Caitlin and John's event was yet another entry in a long list of successes they have had.

After a nice hour of cocktails and conversation in the well-manicured Garden Terrace, Caitlin and John shard their dance in the center of a gigantic dance floor, surrounded by onlooking friends and family.

In case you are wondering what that photo is on the left, that would be a completely exhausted ring bearer, sleeping on his Grandpa's lap. He stayed up until nearly 10 minutes before the last song before he totally ran out of steam and collapsed in his Grandpa's arms. I grabbed a quick photo because it really showed how everyone, both young and old had a great time.

It was one of those nights where I didn't have to do much cajoling to encourage people to dance. The guests must have been eagerly anticipating the opening of the dance floor, since it only took one song before the whole room excitedly made their way to the dance floor and stayed there all night! Way back when, in the mid-1970’s, when Scott Foell and I founded Music Man Mobile DJ Service, off-the-shelf casing or consoles were not widely available for mobile disc jockeys. In order to look good, we had to design and construct our own. Having a partner who was an engineering genius didn’t hurt.

Scott designed and built a one-piece console that he covered in black Formica. It looked stunning. It took a great deal of effort and money, but it was worth it. We always looked good.

Mobile DJs can buy from a wide assortment of industrial-style cases, carpeted consoles, and electronic equipment designed to fit in those units. One can buy big or modular, depending on individual needs for venue access, transportation, and size of crew (1 or more people).

In spite of availability of professional, clean looking disc jockey equipment, I am thoroughly amazed and perplexed that many disc jockey entertainment services have an incredibly weak presentation (click on the image to show it larger). Here are some of the deficiencies I see again and again (not necessarily just in this case).

* Loose, unconcealed wires: From the customer’s point of view, it’s a mess. A guest should never be looking into the a jungle of wires.
* Use of venue banquet tables, typically draped in white, for the purpose of placing a DJ console on it..

COMMENT: To me, a DJ service should arrive self-contained. If they require a table to place equipment upon, they should bring it. And, it should be consistent in look to what is place on it. At a minimum, it should be skirted in black or fold-open facing should screen out the gear. The only requirements a DJ should have are: 1) A place to set up console and speakers. 2) Electricity.

Browsing the internet, I found a couple of photos explain the possibilities quite well. Grundorf, manufactures a hinged-DJ facade that wraps around gear that is not permanently mounted. It magically ‘cleans up the clutter’ to the casual guest.

As well as facades there entire 1-piece consoles, stacked consoles (full width or podium width). Any of those manner of presentation give the DJ a more permanent and polished look. There is no one right answer, as different disc jockeys service different sizes and types of events. Their individual needs, for the local market and their clients will dictate what gear they choose to use, and how it’s organized.

In the photo on the right, DJ Astrid Monroe (Musique Nonstop) shows off a custom white-covered podium-style console. You can see a white speaker in the right side of the photo. The company has beautifully constructed charcoal grey covered booths, and features the ‘white system’ as an upgrade, for an even more elegant presentation.

THIS SYNDROME IS NOT LIMITED TO DJs: There are plenty of photographers who need to carry lots of gear, and must keep it in a reception room for security. Yet, many never really address a clean way to stow it, in plain view. Videographers have some of the same challenges. Even vendors who don’t participate in the reception, such as florists and bakers, must deliver and set up in a professional manner.

The 1-piece console featured (lower right) belongs to Alan Franco of DJ Connection. His 1-piece unit displays at a comfortable height, showing the top portion of his laptop computer, and the microphone, well above it, on a gooseneck. It’s Disc Jockey on low stage really quite an elegant presentation that is going to ’show well’ in any situation.

Moral: It’s not enough to sound good and perform well it you want to earn top dollar and be referred at the highest possible rate. You must look good, too. When the wedding pictures come back and the set up looks like a cobbled together set of road cases on a banquet table, you are not at your best. Brides and grooms are often oblivious to many things that go on around them at a wedding. That’s no excuse. They will see it in the wedding pictures. Guests and family will see it at the event.

Don’t kid yourself: People do care about how you look. And you’ll never know how many referrals you’ll lose, because you’ll never hear about them.

In Sacramento, California, Music On The Move DJs allows couples to come to their studios to record a personal message to be mixed into the special dance songs played on their wedding day!

From their web site: "For a treasured moment, we will record your personal message for your dad, mom or new spouse. We will then edit the song you choose and delicately place your recording into the newly edited music. Our experience and talent in recording and editing music is inspiring. Imagine the feeling and emotion your dad, mom or spouse will feel when they hear your message with your voice while you enjoy dancing that traditional song with them. We will also include two recorded CD copies to share and enjoy over and over."

Un événement intime dans Radnor

In the heart of Radnor lies a true oasis nestled in surrounding wooded area. Step across the ornamented footbridge and you are transported to one of the finest French and Mediterranean bistros on the Main Line.

The event began with Kate and Colton's friends and family filling the ceremony area, eagerly anticipating Kate's walk down the aisle.

Having attended literally hundreds of wedding ceremonies, I have seen and heard many officiants perform the marriage service. I really enjoyed the natural feel and flow that their officiant presented. It was obvious that Kate and Colton had selected just the right person to help them deliver their vows.

After the service, the guests enjoyed cocktail hour while Kate and Colton strolled the lush grounds of the Pond Restaurant with their photographers. Outside, the pond hosts two swans floating silently in the water. It's somewhat ironic that swans would be in attendance at a wedding, since swans mate for life.

It seemed that from the moment the guests poured into the ballroom, they were filled with excitement for the happy couple. To be specific, Kate and Colton's friends and family must have been the most inclined group to take part in the Kissing Glasses tradition!

Everyone in the room danced the night away to a variety of music, but mostly enjoyed the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, and the most popular group of the evening, The Grateful Dead. It was a real pleasure to meet and perform for their families. I wish all the best good fortune for the bride and groom and everyone who attended!

What an incredibly nice couple. It's not often that I encounter a bride and groom who not only enjoy their own event, but also take a moment to come visit me at some time in the evening to ask if they can get me anything.

Susan and Jeffrey began their event by exchanging their vows in the Garden Terrace. Surrounded by their family and friends, they pledged their lives to one another, then shared their first kiss as husband and wife.

After sharing their first dance and enjoying a blessing and one of the better best man speeches I have personally heard in awhile, dinner began.

At every event, I take a moment to visit each table (as dinner begins) to introduce myself, encourage guests to make requests, and ask them to let me know if the volume gets too loud or isn't quite loud enough.

About halfway through my tour of the ballroom, I happened to run into the mother of a bride whose wedding I will be entertaining in June!

For the final song of the evening, we played Susan and Jeffrey's first dance song. It really brought the evening to a great close.

Again, I have to say that Susan and Jeffrey were two of the most genuine and accommodating clients I have ever met. It was truly a complete pleasure to be a part of their special day!

Dancing On The Clouds

Yet another fantastic display from my friend Mike Anderson of Creative Memories Entertainment in Sacramento, California; this has to be one of the most creative first dances I have seen in a long time.

Wait and watch as the clouds float gently across the floor and fill the room, making the bride and groom look as though they are sharing their first dance as husband and wife dancing on the clouds. Amazing!

What an outstanding evening! Danielle & Patrick's wedding reception was hands-down one of the best events I've ever been a part of!

Danielle & Patrick drew upon numerous creative resources when it came to making their event as memorable as possible.

Because Patrick's family has an extensive history in boxing, they entered the room to the Rocky Theme song, a "phavorite" around here. What happened next was something that none of their friends and family had ever seen before. A light snow fell over the bride and groom as they shared their first dance as husband and wife.

You read that right. It snowed in the reception hall while the bride and groom danced under sparkling snowflakes. You can view a short video of it here.

After dinner, the cake was cut, the parents' dances were done and it came time to throw the bouquet. Danielle had a special bouquet made up for this moment: A fortune bouquet. The bouquet was divided into five smaller bouqets, each with a small strip of paper sewn to it. Each piece of paper had a small inscription on it telling the lucky catcher how they would fall in love, when, with whom, etc. Very cool!

I wish more wedding receptions had the sort of signature flair that Danielle and Patrick's had! It was very obvious to everyone that they had worked very hard to completely astound their guests!

Leap Day Legend

Did you know that in 5th Century Ireland, St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick that women were becoming impatient of waiting for a man to propose to them? According to legend, St. Patrick gave the permission for women to propose marriage only during a Leap Year. The reason for choosing Leap Day was because it was not recognized as a real day, just a "filler" day to keep the calendar year true. And in case you live in a cave, it only happens every four years.

Scotland was the first to document this practice, by passing a law in 1288. The law also included this clause:

"A man who refused a woman’s proposal was obligated to compensate her with anything from a kiss to money to a silk gown as a way to soften the blow of rejection."

At some point, Leap Year proposals turned to just Leap Day proposals, due to the pressure men felt from women to say "yes".

So, aside from the interesting myths and folklores that surround Leap Day, it’s still an actual calendar day, right? For those superstitious couples, luck and success is said to be heightened on Leap Day. In fact, it happens to be a Friday! Surely, there will be a number of evening weddings taking place. Does that mean you celebrate your wedding anniversary only every four years?

Technically, science states that we’d have to take the date and hour and do some additions to it, then subtractions, then divisions and you’d have the exact day to celebrate your wedding anniversary. But, over time this perfect calculation would jump your occasion to the day after or the day after that, and so on. It's just so much simpler to recognize the date. Therefore, theoretically, a Leap Day wedding would celebrate an anniversary every four years!

Next year, you'll have to choose between the 28th of February or the 1st of March to observe your special day. Maybe something nice and quiet for your non-leap year anniversaries…and when the Leap Year Anniversary comes around in 2012, you have a huge bash! Honor old school traditions and have a playful party where your single girlfriends get to meet and mingle with single guy friends? (Don’t forget to have your guy friends bring little presents to hand out to girls they’re turning down... Gift cards are acceptable.)

When you are hiring your professionals for your wedding, you should ask questions! You should make sure the promises being made by your vendors are being spelled out on your contracts!

Brides do not need to be afraid of "hurting their vendors’" feelings to ensure a successful wedding. As long as you are being nice (not overly nice), people will want to help you.

Don’t let mean salespeople or other brides who delight in labeling a bridezilla cause you to make compromises for your wedding plans!

The Welcome Back Reception

Though their reception was celebrated this past Saturday, Nikki and Bill were married on January 5, 2008 on the luxurious white sands of Jamaica at the Sandals Whitehouse European Village & Spa.

Unless you're pretty well-off financially, one of the drawbacks to having your wedding ceremony in a far away land is the necessity of limiting your guest list. For this reason, couples like Nikki and Bill limit the number of attendees at their destination wedding to a very small number, electing to wait until they return home to bring their friends or families together for a celebration.

When the guests arrived, they first enjoyed some cocktail hour time, then witnessed Nikki and Bill reaffirm their marriage to one another. It was a very nice gesture to their friends and family who couldn't make it to Jamaica.

After the ceremony, the guests resumed cocktail hour and watched a DVD slideshow with photos from their first exchange of vows. Nikki was nice enough to email me some pictures, which I've included in their slide show.

Shortly after their ceremony, Nikki changed into a much more comfortable dress. To quote Nikki, "(It was) a white gown with blue and silver beading. It still says "wedding dress", but also "I'm here to party."

Their reception was extraordinarily fun! Everyone had a really great time dancing and celebrating the marriage of a really great couple!

Starting A New Year In The Old City

While Sunday weddings are usually a little more sluggish (when it comes to getting people up and dancing), Lori and Kevin's event went off without a single hitch. Also, despite a majority of the guests being rabid New York Giants fans attending their wedding during a major playoff game, the friends and family stayed mostly focused on the celebration at hand.

Lori and Kevin treated their guests to an experience in one of Philadelphia's finest and most regal facilities. The food was superior, the service was attentive and fast, and the mood in the room was extremely happy and light-hearted.

One very cool thing I noticed at the entrance was a rather unique guestbook idea. Lori and Kevin had purchased a copy of "Philadelphia Then And Now", a book depicting photos taken in the recent and more distant past of several of the most historic locations in Philadelphia. Their guests were invited to peruse the book, select one of the photos they might have liked and use the white area in the photos to write their well-wishes and congratulation notes. It looked like an awesome idea!

On a personal note, my new Bose sound system flourished in the Down Town Club's ballroom! It seemed as though music was coming from every corner of the room, surrounding everyone in the perfect level of sound!

I could not be happier with my new sound system!

What can I say about the Radnor Hotel? It's what an Old Style Main Line wedding should be. A hands-on, attentive staff, fast and polite service, highly polished surfaces and chadeliers, award-winning gardens in the back... There's nothing about the Radnor Hotel that doesn't say "perfect spot for a wedding reception".

Devon & David's event was extremely decadent with illuminated centerpieces, an ice sculpture of the Love Park statue, and bottles of Dom Pérignon for the guests to enjoy as they brought in the new year.

I set up their dance floor with complete quadraphonic surround sound, giving them a nightclub-feel to enhance the dance party. As the countdown to 2008 drew near, Devon and David's family crowded around a television setup next to the dance floor to watch the ball drop on Times Square.

After everyone counted down from ten, the corks flew and everyone shared hugs, kisses, and glad tidings for the new year. Even I received a kiss from one of their grandmothers.

New Year's Day is a day to forgive, forget, and move forward. However, Devon & David's wedding celebration was one that their guests could not possibly forget.I really enjoyed watching as the guests danced the night away. It seemed like their happiness was taken just a notch above the norm, considering this was not only Devon and David's wedding day and it wasn't just New Years Eve, but it was also Devon's birthday!

At one point in the evening, Devon's uncle Bruce took the microphone and related to everyone how special it was for him to be present on the day she was born and now to witness his niece take the next step in her life. It was a very touching moment that everyone seemed to appreciate.

Surrounded by the Historic Main Line, Waynesborough Country Club was designed to capture the essence of an original Chester County Manor House. The exquisite ballroom, detailed in classic, soft decor offers a spectacular view overlooking their PGA Tour Championship Golf Course and the beautiful Chester County countryside.

Kate & Joshua's event was a very relaxed affair. During cocktail hour, while a collection of Tom Petty's hits played over the speakers, guests mingled quietly, enjoying cocktails and wishing each other a "Merry Christmas" and a "Happy New Year". When Kate & Joshua entered the room, they enjoyed their first dance as husband and wife and proceeded to enjoy one of the best dining experiences available in Chester County.

A very unique addition to the dinner was the first course. Guests were served a tomato soup and grilled cheese appetizer. As a little girl, Kate enjoyed sharing this meal with her father and thought it was a special memory she wanted to share with her entire family, both old and new.

Everyone was excited to fill the floor as soon as possible, and the Waynesborough Country Club did not disappoint the guests by making them sit through a long, drawn-out dinner. Their service was expeditious, yet elegant. The night seemed to move along very quickly! It wasn't long before EVERYONE was on the floor, regardless of ages. While normally, some guests might leave the floor when the song styles change from one genre to the next, the guessts flooded the floor enjoying everything from the Rolling Stones to Rihanna! What a fun group!

When looking at numerous magazine reviews and online articles about facilities to host a wedding reception, I have often wondered "Who writes these reviews?".

I don't think a majority of those reviews are completely helpful, because they are mostly written by individuals who haven't truly experienced an actual wedding reception in the places they're writing about. With that in mind, I have taken it upon myself to consider the venues I have provided wedding entertainment direction in this year and have come up with what I feel are the "cream of the crop".

In each category, I have not played favorites or written over flattering words. The winners I selected below are who I consider most deserving. Please note, I have not played in every facility in Philadelphia this year, thus not every facility in Philadelphia had a fair chance at winning. No hard feelings to those not mentioned below.

Here is something the bride and groom don't often consider: How nice/helpful will the banquet staff be to the other professionals in the room? You can be certain, when a banquet director or member of the service staff is being rude and discourteous to the photographer or the entertainment, it can sometimes detract from the enthusiasm and motivation level to deliver the best service possible. Also, when the delivery of dinner hits a snag, does the banquet manager explode on the servers and/or interfere with the flow of event to cover their own mistakes? In 2007, no facility seemed more concerned with flawless execution and friendliness. Springfield Country Club has proven that it is possible to work with superior precision, smiling the entire time.

Shelley Dickinson of Sofitel Philadelphia is a remarkable professional who, in my opinion, has no distinguishable flaws. If you have the opportunity to work with Shelley at an event, you are extremely fortunate indeed. Respectfully speaking, there are many banquet directors in the Delaware Valley who could learn a lot from someone as great as Shelley.

In my opinion, it stands alone as the most elegantly appointed ballroom for 2007.

The RiverCrest consistantly goes above and beyond the normal expectations to deliver a wedding reception that is memorable for all the right reasons. The comfort they offer to every bride combined with an outstanding presentation in both setting and food leaves every guest with a "good full" feeling as they head to their cars. (They haven't had too much, nor have they left wanting for more.)

The overwhelming attentiveness to detail at RiverCrest is inspirational. Their ability to identify "potentials" before they become "problems" prevents the bride and groom from looking bad to their friends and family and helps promote a relaxing environment.

Because Christmas is right around the corner and I thought snow was in order, I decided to surprise Lauren and Joe with some snowflakes projected on the walls and floor. They looked really great and added a festive ambiance to the affair.

When I met with Lauren and Joesph in their home a few weeks ago, I had a nearly instant impression that despite their wedding day falling so close to Christmas (and on a Friday evening, no less), the wedding was going to feature a jam-packed filled dance floor from beginning to end. It was nice to see that I was very right.

I must say, after a long season of holiday parties, it felt great to get back into weddings. I personally could not have asked for a better crowd or a friendlier bride and groom.

New Sound For The New Year

While speakers are not often on a bride's list of things to be concerned with, I thought I would share some news of a serious sound upgrade I have made for the new year.

Two weeks ago, I invested in the new Bose L1 Model II system, an award-winning sound system that replaces conventional monitors, mixers and PA speakers. The system's breakthrough Cylindrical Radiator® loudspeaker produces wide, uniform sound coverage on-stage and throughout an audience of up to several hundred with little dropoff in volume and tone.

What makes the L1 line array so different begins with the shape. Each L1 system contains a column of many closely spaced drivers mounted in a tall, slim enclosure. This unusual design has profound effects on the sound.

Because of its shape, the L1 system projects sound waves that expand out and to the sides, but sends very little up and down. Sound spreads more evenly across the stage and into the audience, and the sound level drops off much more slowly than from a conventional speaker.

So, what does that mean for you, the bride-to-be?

It greatly improves the quality of the sound and allows me to amplify the music enough to saturate the room with sound, without causing complaints that it is "too loud".

During dinner, your guests will be comfortable enough to have meaningful conversations at their tables without feeling the need to raise their voice, and still be able to hear the music anywhere in the room.

When the dancing time begins, the sound is not only sent out over the crowd, but is also sent through the dance floor. The difference is unmistakable.

Coming from the old school of thinking (bigger speaker cabinets are always better), I was significantly skeptical about making the investment in this premium sound system, but after owning it for a couple weeks, I can safely say:

Wedding receptions will never sound the same again.
